On black textile, Eli Made does not paint: he removes. Portrait of a Congolese artist who has turned a household chemical process into a tool of absolute pictorial rigour.
Artist 06 / 07
Light is not laid onto the canvas but drawn out of its own darkness.
Biography
Democratic Republic of the Congo
Eli Made develops a visual language founded on the subtraction of colour and the oxidation of matter. Working with bleach on black textile, he replaces the addition of paint with a process of revelation: pigment is extracted from the support so that the figure emerges from the dark ground.
His practice combines the precision of drawing with the vitality of an unconventional medium. By turning a household chemical process into a tool of absolute pictorial rigour, Made builds compositions of high visual density in which light is not laid onto the canvas but drawn out of its own darkness.
